The Open Question From Yesterday, Answered
Yesterday’s post tracked a clean split across three hyperscaler earnings: Alphabet and Meta both raised capex guidance and got punished (down 5-7% and ~7% respectively), while Microsoft held capex steady and rose. We closed with an explicit test for today: “if Amazon raises guidance and gets punished like Alphabet and Meta, that’s a third data point confirming a real shift. If Amazon raises and the stock holds up, this week’s pattern may be more about company-specific execution than a market-wide repricing.”
Amazon reported after the close on July 30. It raised guidance. The stock did not get punished — shares jumped roughly 9-10% in after-hours trading (Barron’s, TradingKey, Reuters). The clean pattern from 48 hours ago just broke.
What Amazon Actually Reported
Revenue came in at $200.6B, topping estimates, with operating income of $27.5B. The headline number: AWS revenue grew 37% year-over-year, its fastest growth rate since 2021, easily clearing the bar Wall Street had set going into the print (multiple previews, including tastylive and CNBC, had flagged AWS reacceleration as the swing factor for the stock). Net sales overall rose 20%.
On capex, Amazon raised its 2026 guidance from roughly $200B to $220B — a $20B increase the Washington Post attributed directly to the strength of the Q2 print, and CNBC specifically tied to higher memory component costs, echoing the same “cost-driven, not just demand-driven” dynamic Meta cited back in our July 26 post. Multiple outlets (Investing.com, 24/7 Wall Street) also reported Amazon’s free cash flow turned negative this quarter under the weight of AI infrastructure spend — the same signal that triggered Alphabet’s ~$255B market-cap erasure on July 22.
CEO Andy Jassy struck an aggressive tone on the call, saying AWS could become a “trillion-dollar” business.
Why the Pattern Broke
On paper, Amazon checked every box that punished Alphabet five days ago: capex raised, free cash flow negative, cost inflation cited as a driver. The difference is what showed up on the other side of the ledger. Alphabet’s cloud backlog and growth numbers were strong but not accelerating; Amazon’s AWS growth rate jumped to a five-year high, directly answering the question multiple previews had posed all week — whether AWS could finally reaccelerate after lagging Azure and Google Cloud’s growth rates for several quarters. When the growth story is strong enough, evidently, the market will fund a capex raise and a negative free-cash-flow quarter without punishing the stock. When it isn’t — Alphabet’s case — negative free cash flow reads as a red flag instead of confirmation of demand.
That reframes the lesson from yesterday’s post. It was never simply “raising capex gets punished, holding capex gets rewarded.” It’s that investors are now pricing capex increases conditionally — against whether the underlying growth number justifies the spend increase in the same print. Microsoft’s steady guidance and strong profit growth cleared that bar without a capex story to defend. Amazon’s accelerating AWS growth cleared it despite a bigger capex number and negative free cash flow. Alphabet’s case, by contrast, paired a capex raise with growth that, while real, didn’t feel like enough of a step-change to justify negative free cash flow on top of it.
The Four-Hyperscaler Scorecard, Updated
- Microsoft: capex held steady, profit +31.6% YoY → stock rose.
- Alphabet: capex raised to $205B, first negative FCF since 2004 → stock fell 5-7%, ~$255B erased.
- Meta: capex range raised (low end), profit -14% YoY → stock fell ~7%.
- Amazon: capex raised to $220B, FCF negative, AWS growth accelerated to 37% (fastest since 2021) → stock rose ~9-10%.
Three of four hyperscalers raised capex this earnings season. Two got punished, two got rewarded. The dollar figure alone no longer predicts the stock reaction — the growth number attached to it does.
Investment Read
Combined 2026 hyperscaler capex guidance keeps climbing past the $725B figure we cited on July 26, with Amazon’s $20B addition being the latest confirmed increase (Citi’s $800B+ 2027 combined estimate for Google, Meta, and Amazon alone, cited in yesterday’s post, now looks directionally right rather than aggressive). But this week closes out with a more precise read than “markets are turning on AI capex”: they’re turning on capex increases that aren’t backed by a visible growth acceleration in the same quarter. That’s a healthier dynamic than an indiscriminate re-rating of the entire sector, and it argues against reading Alphabet’s and Meta’s selloffs as a verdict on AI infrastructure spend broadly. The number to watch going forward isn’t the capex guide itself — it’s whether the segment growth rate reported alongside it is accelerating or decelerating.
