What is CPI?

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures the average change over time in prices paid by urban consumers for a basket of goods and services — including food, housing, clothing, transportation, medical care, and recreation. The YoY% shows how much prices have risen compared to the same month a year ago. The Fed targets 2% inflation as a healthy level that supports economic growth without eroding purchasing power. Readings above 5% indicate high inflation that typically prompts the Fed to raise interest rates. Notable high-inflation episodes: post-WWII (1947–48), oil shocks (1973–74, 1979–80), and the 2021–2023 COVID-era surge peaking at ~9%.

CPI vs PPI — What's the Difference?

The Producer Price Index (PPI) measures price changes from the seller's perspective — prices that domestic producers receive for their output, before goods reach consumers. PPI is considered a leading indicator of CPI: when producers pay more for raw materials and energy, they eventually pass those costs on to consumers. PPI tends to be more volatile than CPI, swinging sharply with commodity and energy prices. A widening gap between PPI and CPI can signal margin pressure on businesses (PPI high, CPI low) or demand destruction (CPI high, PPI falling).

CPI vs PPI —

The Yield Curve as a Recession Predictor

A yield curve inversion occurs when the Fed Funds Rate exceeds the 10-Year Treasury yield. The red-shaded zones on the chart mark these inversion periods. Historically, every US recession since the 1960s has been preceded by an inversion — typically by 12–18 months.

Why it matters: When short-term rates exceed long-term rates, banks' net interest margins compress — they borrow short-term at higher rates while lending long-term at lower rates. This squeezes credit creation, slows lending, and eventually contracts the economy. The right Y-axis is intentionally inverted on this chart: as rates rise, the axis goes down, because higher rates act as gravity on asset prices — especially long-duration assets like equities.
