Bitcoin — Digital Sound Money
Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency created in January 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It runs on a public blockchain — a distributed ledger maintained by ~17,000 nodes worldwide — with no central bank or issuer. Its total supply is hard-capped at 21 million coins, enforced by code, making it the only asset in human history with a mathematically guaranteed finite supply. New coins are created through "mining" — computers competing to validate transactions — and the creation rate is cut in half every ~4 years in an event called the halving. By 2025 it had grown from a $0.001 curiosity to a $2.5 trillion asset held by sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, central banks, and the US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.
Born from the 2008 Financial Crisis
Bitcoin was born directly from the 2008–2009 global financial crisis. Satoshi embedded a permanent message inside the genesis block (January 3, 2009): "The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks." It was a timestamp — and a statement. The 2008 crisis erupted when Lehman Brothers collapsed on September 15, 2008, after years of reckless mortgage-backed securities that destroyed the global credit system. The US government mobilized $700 billion in TARP ("Too Big to Fail") funds. Yet this public money did not go toward rebuilding credit trust or compensating ordinary victims — the very Wall Street institutions whose reckless behavior caused the crash paid their executives billions in bonuses from public funds while millions of Americans lost their homes. This Wall Street moral hazard — privatizing gains, socializing losses — was a primary motivation for Satoshi's design: a monetary system where no government can print money for the powerful, and no institution can be too big to fail.
How the Blockchain Works
The Bitcoin blockchain is a distributed ledger that records every transaction ever made. Each "block" contains a batch of transactions and a cryptographic fingerprint (hash) of the previous block — forming an immutable chain. To add a new block, miners must solve a computationally intensive puzzle (Proof of Work), expending real-world energy. This makes tampering prohibitively expensive: altering a past block would require redoing all Proof of Work for every subsequent block, faster than the entire global network — practically impossible. Mining difficulty adjusts automatically every 2,016 blocks to maintain a 10-minute block time, whether 1,000 or 10 million miners participate.
Bitcoin solves the fundamental "double-spend problem" of digital money: unlike a physical coin, a digital file can be copied infinitely. Bitcoin prevents double-spending through the public ledger — every node independently verifies that a coin hasn't been spent before. Combined with the 21 million supply cap enforced purely by code (no authority can override it), this creates genuine digital scarcity for the first time in history: an asset that can be transmitted instantly, globally, 24/7, without permission, and without any intermediary.
Every ~4 Years, the Supply Shock Repeats
The halving cuts miner rewards in half, reducing daily new supply by 50%. Historically, each halving has been followed by a bull market that peaked 12–18 months later — driven by supply scarcity meeting steadily growing demand. The gain multiples shrink each cycle as Bitcoin's market cap grows, but each peak has still reached new all-time highs.

Where Are We in the 4th Cycle?
Bitcoin hit its 4th-cycle peak of $124,774 in October 2025 — 18 months after the April 2024 halving, in line with historical averages. A sharp correction followed, bottoming at $58,551 on July 1, 2026 (−53% from peak) — a severe but not unprecedented mid-cycle drawdown. Since then Bitcoin has recovered steadily, then accelerated sharply in the second half of August 2026 after the Treasury doubled its long-bond buyback program on Aug 19, pulling the 30-year yield off a two-decade high and triggering a short squeeze that took Bitcoin from the low $60,000s to the high $70,000s within days (see our Aug 22 post). The key question is whether the cycle is entering a second leg up (as in 2021's double-peak structure) or this is a bear-market bounce ahead of a deeper multi-year decline. The rainbow chart currently places Bitcoin in the "HODL" to "Is this a bubble?" zone — historically a zone where further gains remain possible but risk is elevated.
The Regulatory Turning Point: GENIUS Act, Clarity Act & ARMA
2025–2026 marks the first time the US Congress has passed comprehensive crypto legislation, ending a decade of regulatory ambiguity. Three laws define the new framework:
Establishes the first federal framework for stablecoins. Requires 1:1 dollar reserves and quarterly audits. Bans new algorithmic stablecoins for 2 years. Stablecoin market: $220B+.
Defines Bitcoin and Ether as commodities under CFTC. Resolves SEC/CFTC jurisdiction. Passed Senate Banking Committee May 14, 2026. On Sept 15, 2026, the Senate cloture vote on H.R. 3633 failed 49-50, short of the 60 needed, with zero Democrats voting yes and Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) crossing over to vote no. House GOP leadership has no floor session scheduled until Nov 9 (after the midterms), so no bill remains to reconcile with the House text in 2026. Since then, the SEC and CFTC have moved unilaterally: on Sept 17, SEC Chair Paul Atkins published an "Innovation Exemption" for tokenized-securities venues and the CFTC issued a no-action letter for Solana wallet infrastructure; on Sept 18, the CFTC formally sent its proposed "Regulation Crypto Assets" rule to the White House (OIRA) for review. Both agency heads and JPMorgan have called this relief temporary and less durable than legislation. Bitcoin, Solana, and XRP all rallied on the news, though XRP's core jurisdictional gap (CFTC spot-market authority) can only be closed by Congress. Majority Leader Thune could still move to reconsider cloture before midterm campaigning consumes the floor calendar.
Authorizes Treasury to purchase up to 1M BTC over 5 years. Mandates 20-year hold and quarterly Proof of Reserve audits. Codifies the Trump Strategic Bitcoin Reserve into permanent law.

GENIUS Act · Clarity Act · ARMA
