Three Earnings Reports, One Diverging Story

Our July 26 post put combined 2026 hyperscaler capex guidance at $725B and flagged one thing to watch: Meta’s mid-year raise was the only one of the four framed as cost-driven rather than demand-driven, and we wrote that “if it broadens, [that] would be the more useful leading indicator than the headline dollar figure itself.” Three days later, it broadened — and the market’s reaction to it changed in a way that post didn’t anticipate.

This week is the actual Q2/fiscal-Q4 2026 earnings season for the same four hyperscalers. Alphabet reported July 22. Meta and Microsoft both reported today, July 29. Amazon reports tomorrow, July 30. The results split sharply down the middle.

Alphabet: Record CapEx, Negative Free Cash Flow, ~$255B Erased

On July 22, Alphabet posted a genuine beat — revenue up 24% year-over-year, Google Cloud revenue up 82% to $24.8B. But capex told a different story: a record quarterly capex of $44.9B, full-year 2026 guidance raised again to $205B (up from the $175-185B range we cited three days later based on Q1-era guidance), and Alphabet’s first negative free cash flow since 2004, driven by AI infrastructure spend. Unfulfilled purchase commitments — contracted infrastructure spend not yet on the balance sheet — surged to $811B.

Wall Street’s response: shares fell roughly 5-7% in the days following the print, erasing about $255B in market cap, despite the underlying growth numbers being some of the best in the company’s history.

Meta: Guidance Raised Again, Profit Falls 14%, Stock Slumps ~7%

Today, Meta reported ad revenue growth of roughly 33%, but profit fell 14% year-over-year and free cash flow was, per Reuters, “wiped out” by the AI buildout. Meta raised the low end of its FY2026 capex range — the same range that had already been raised once this year, from $115-135B to $125-145B, back in the spring. Shares fell approximately 7% on the results.

Microsoft: The One That Held Steady — And Was Rewarded

Also today, Microsoft posted profit up 31.6% year-over-year. The key difference from its two peers: capex guidance held steady rather than being raised again. Microsoft’s stock rose on the print — a sharp divergence from Alphabet and Meta reporting in the same 48-hour window.

Amazon Reports Tomorrow

Amazon’s Q2 2026 results are due July 30 — after this post was written. Multiple previews (Motley Fool, The Globe and Mail) predict CEO Andy Jassy will raise Amazon’s roughly $200B FY2026 capex guide further. Separately, Citi has projected combined Google + Meta + Amazon 2027 capex above $800B. Neither figure is confirmed yet; both are worth checking against tomorrow’s actual print rather than taking on faith.

Why This Matters More Than the Dollar Figures

Our July 26 post’s open question was whether other hyperscalers would start citing costs rather than demand as their reason for spending more, and whether that shift would change how markets price the capex cycle. Both things happened within a week. Alphabet’s negative free cash flow and Meta’s falling profit are qualitatively different signals than the Q1-era story of backlog-driven optimism (cloud backlog, AWS growth, AI revenue run-rate) that dominated the narrative in our last post.

The cleanest data point this week isn’t any single dollar figure — it’s the divergence. Two hyperscalers raised capex further and were punished (Alphabet, Meta); the one that held capex steady was rewarded (Microsoft). For most of this cycle, “more AI capex” and “rising stock price” moved together, on the logic that spend was chasing real demand. This week is the first clear instance of the market pricing capex increases and capex discipline in opposite directions within the same reporting window.

Investment Read

This isn’t a signal to exit AI infrastructure exposure — Google Cloud growing 82% and Microsoft’s 31.6% profit growth are not signs of demand collapsing. But the question worth tracking has shifted from “will hyperscalers keep raising capex” (clearly yes, for at least three of four) to “will markets keep funding open-ended capex increases without conditions” (no longer a given, based on this week alone). Watch Amazon’s print tomorrow: if Amazon raises guidance and gets punished like Alphabet and Meta, that’s a third data point confirming a real shift. If Amazon raises and the stock holds up, this week’s pattern may be more about company-specific execution (Alphabet’s FCF, Meta’s margin compression) than a market-wide repricing of the capex cycle.

(Motley Fool, The Globe and Mail)는 앤디 재시 CEO가 현재 약 $200B인 아마존의 2026년 capex 가이던스를 추가로 상향할 것으로 예상한다.
