The Number Moved Again
In our NVIDIA-vs-Cisco piece from two weeks ago, we cited hyperscalers spending “$300-500B combined on AI capex in 2024-2025” as the ceiling to watch. That ceiling just moved. The four largest hyperscalers — Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, and Meta — now guide to a combined $725B in 2026 capex, up 77% from $410B in 2025.
This isn’t a one-time reaffirmation. Meta mid-year raised its full-year 2026 capex guidance from $115-135B to $125-145B, explicitly citing higher component pricing and additional data center costs — a company adding spend because inputs got more expensive, not because it changed strategy.
The Breakdown
- Amazon: ~$200B guided for 2026, the largest single number. Q1 capex ran at $44.2B annualized, alongside AWS growth of 28%.
- Alphabet: raised guidance to $175-185B, well above prior consensus. Q1 capex of $35.67B more than doubled year-over-year, and Google Cloud’s backlog jumped past $460B — a demand signal, not just a spending decision.
- Microsoft: guiding near $190B. Fiscal Q3 capex of $30.88B was up 84% YoY, with AI revenue now running above a $37B annual pace.
- Meta: raised to $125-145B (from $115-135B), the only one of the four to explicitly frame the increase as cost-driven rather than demand-driven.
Why This Matters More Than a Bigger Number
Three of the four hyperscalers point to demand as the driver — Alphabet’s cloud backlog, Amazon’s AWS growth, Microsoft’s AI revenue run-rate. That’s the bullish case for the capex cycle: it’s being pulled by paying customers, not pushed speculatively. Meta is the exception, and worth watching separately — a cost-driven capex raise (component pricing, data center construction costs) is a different signal than a demand-driven one. If component/power/land costs keep rising across the industry, capex guidance can keep climbing even if underlying AI demand growth decelerates, which would complicate any read on where the cycle actually stands.
Revisiting the Cisco Comparison
Our prior post’s core question was “when does the AI infrastructure build-out cycle peak, and how much is already priced in.” This data point pushes the peak further out, not closer. A capex cycle that’s still accelerating — and getting revised upward mid-year rather than being trimmed — is not yet showing the deceleration signal that would typically precede a NVIDIA growth slowdown. The risk this reframes rather than resolves: if guidance is increasingly cost-driven rather than demand-driven, the eventual slowdown may arrive as a margin story (rising input costs against flat/decelerating demand) rather than a simple capex pullback.
Investment Read
Nothing here argues for exiting AI infrastructure exposure — the demand signals (cloud backlogs, AI revenue run-rates) remain intact for three of four hyperscalers. But Meta’s cost-driven framing is the first crack worth tracking: watch Q3/Q4 earnings calls for whether other hyperscalers start citing input costs (rather than demand) as a reason for capex increases. That shift, if it broadens, would be the more useful leading indicator than the headline dollar figure itself.
