The Number That Moved

On September 25, Bloomberg reported that Goldman Sachs has raised its forecast for combined 2027 AI-infrastructure spending by five hyperscalers – Amazon, Alphabet, Microsoft, Oracle, and Meta – to $1.2 trillion, according to strategist Ryan Hammond. That’s not a routine model tweak: it’s over 50% above the roughly $800 billion the same five companies are on pace to spend in 2026, and it sits above Wall Street’s own consensus estimate of $1.1 trillion. Goldman frames the scale in historical terms – relative to GDP, it would be the largest investment cycle since 19th-century railroad construction. The figure has since been corroborated by multiple independent outlets (the-decoder.com, Startup Fortune, The Malaysian Reserve, Briefs Finance), all citing the same Bloomberg/Hammond numbers.

This matters for this blog’s running AI-capex thread specifically because it isn’t a single company’s guidance print – it’s the Street’s most closely watched research desk revising its view of the entire hyperscaler cohort upward, at a moment when this blog’s most recent capex post (Sept 24, Oracle’s Project Jupiter force majeure notice) was a rare data point cutting the other way.

The Trajectory Goldman Is Describing

Year YoY capex growth (Goldman) Combined capex (5 hyperscalers)
2026 ~100% ~$800B (pace)
2027 54% $1.2T (new Goldman forecast, vs. $1.1T consensus)
2028 12% Deceleration continues

The pace of growth is slowing even as the dollar figure keeps climbing – Goldman’s own framing is that the growth rate peaks this year and steadily decompresses, while the absolute spend keeps setting records through at least 2027. That combination – slower growth, bigger numbers – is consistent with a maturing rather than an accelerating boom, even though the headline “$1.2 trillion” reads as bullish.

Why Goldman Thinks the Money Still Works, and Where It’s Nervous

Goldman’s own math requires roughly $300 billion a year in AI-linked revenue for the hyperscalers to earn back these outlays – current AI revenue still falls short of that bar, but cloud revenue growth has itself been accelerating, from 25% in 2024 to 48% in Q2 2026, which is the evidence Goldman leans on to justify the higher number rather than calling it excess. The report flags two structural cautions worth carrying forward: (1) it’s still unclear whether revenue growth at the AI labs actually consuming this compute – OpenAI and Anthropic chief among them – is fast enough to justify the buildout, since both are central counterparties to the financial instruments backing it; and (2) combined hyperscaler capex now exceeds what the group generates from operations, meaning the gap increasingly gets filled with debt rather than free cash flow. Goldman also names physical bottlenecks – power, labor, and memory-chip supply – as the likeliest brakes on the buildout, separate from any financial constraint. Notably, Goldman was already on record in June flagging that Street consensus was too low; this is the second upward revision in three months, not a one-off call.

How This Fits What This Blog Has Already Covered

Every prior post in this blog’s capex thread was either a single company’s own guidance (Oracle’s $664B backlog on Sept 11, Broadcom’s FY2028 $230B guide on Sept 7) or a single new infrastructure commitment (Microsoft’s 38GW plan on Sept 12, Qualcomm-Amazon’s chip deal on Sept 9). Goldman’s note is the first entry in the thread that’s explicitly cross-company and forward-looking at the sector level, and it lands just three days after the Oracle Project Jupiter story (Sept 24) showed a live example of execution risk at one of the five companies in Goldman’s own basket. The two stories aren’t contradictory – Goldman’s own report acknowledges physical-world bottlenecks as a real constraint – but together they sharpen the picture: Wall Street’s own capex forecast keeps climbing even as the on-the-ground evidence that some of that capex is hard to execute on schedule keeps piling up.

Investment Read

A 50% forecast raise from Goldman is a bullish signal for the AI-infrastructure supply chain (chipmakers, power and networking suppliers, memory) that this blog has tracked through Nvidia, Broadcom, and Qualcomm coverage – but the deceleration in growth rate (100% to 54% to 12%) and the shift toward debt financing are the two numbers worth watching over the next two quarters, not the trillion-dollar headline. If hyperscaler earnings calls in late October/early November confirm capex guidance anywhere near Goldman’s $1.2T for 2027, that’s a strong signal the buildout is durable through next year; if any of the five walks guidance down from where Goldman is now modeling, that would be the first genuine cross-company capex deceleration signal this blog has seen since starting this thread in July.
