Two Deals, Five Days, $80 Billion
On August 26, Bloomberg, Reuters, and CNBC reported that Anthropic agreed to pay neocloud operator Nscale $45 billion to lease AI computing capacity — 460 megawatts of Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips at Nscale’s “Monarch” compute campus. Five days later, on August 31, the Wall Street Journal (exclusive), Reuters, and Bloomberg reported a second deal: Anthropic will pay $35 billion to Nvidia-backed cloud provider Lambda for compute run through Hut 8’s “Beacon Point” data center campus in Texas — a build reported at 350 megawatts within a larger 1-gigawatt site. Notably, Nvidia itself reportedly holds the lease on the underlying infrastructure in the Lambda deal, deepening the direct financial link between Nvidia and the capacity Anthropic is renting.
Neither deal involved a hyperscaler capex guidance revision — the news this blog has tracked all summer (Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Meta, Nvidia). Both are AI-lab-to-neocloud compute leases, a structurally different category of AI infrastructure spending that has been building quietly alongside the more visible hyperscaler capex story.
Anthropic’s 2026 Compute Shopping List
Stacking this week’s two deals against Anthropic’s other disclosed 2026 compute and infrastructure commitments shows the scale of what a single, not-yet-public AI lab has now committed to:
| Date | Partner | Amount | Structure |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2026-04-24 | Up to $40B | Cash + compute (cloud/TPU) investment | |
| 2026-05-06 | SpaceX (Colossus) | ~$15B/year (~$45B over 3 yrs, per Axios) | Compute lease |
| 2026-07-22 | AMD | Up to $5B | Equity investment tied to chip supply |
| 2026-08-26 | Nscale | $45B | Compute lease, 460MW Vera Rubin, Monarch campus |
| 2026-08-31 | Lambda (Nvidia-backed) | $35B | Compute lease, Beacon Point/Hut 8 campus, Texas |
| Total disclosed 2026 | ~$170B |
That figure is illustrative, not a precise consolidated number — the Google and AMD amounts mix cash investment with compute credits, and none of these companies has published a single reconciled capex figure the way Microsoft or Alphabet do in 10-Qs. But the direction is unambiguous: Anthropic, which has not yet completed its widely-discussed IPO, has now disclosed roughly $170 billion in compute-related commitments in 2026 alone — a figure that would rank among the largest capex programs of any company in the market, hyperscaler or not, if it were being spent by a single balance sheet rather than financed through leases and partner investment.
Why This Extends, Not Repeats, What We’ve Already Covered
This blog has tracked Nvidia’s expanding role as an AI-infrastructure financier since our August 10 post on its $500B+ third-party financing consortium (Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs, KKR), through the August 15 post flagging Nvidia’s abrupt cut to its OpenAI Ohio guarantee, to the August 27 post on Nvidia’s record Q2 print and AWS tripling its GPU order. That thread has been almost entirely about Nvidia’s own balance sheet and hyperscaler customers.
This week’s news is a different vector on the same underlying story: Nvidia’s financing fingerprints (backing Lambda, supplying the Vera Rubin chips underpinning the Nscale lease) now extend into deals where the buyer isn’t a hyperscaler at all, but an AI lab renting capacity from a neocloud. Elon Musk added a live reminder of the risk in this structure on August 28, warning SpaceX could “pull back” capacity from its own Anthropic deal if Starlink/Starship compute needs get “super tight” — a reminder that even the counterparties on the other side of these leases have their own capacity constraints and can renegotiate.
Investment Read
None of this moves a single hyperscaler’s reported capex line, and none of it is a primary-source confirmation that overall industry capex is accelerating or decelerating — Anthropic is one company, and lease commitments over multi-year terms are not the same as cash spent this quarter. What it does show is that the AI buildout’s marginal financing structure is diversifying: capacity is increasingly being built and financed by neoclouds (Nscale, Lambda, CoreWeave, Hut 8) with Nvidia’s balance sheet and equipment underwriting the risk, and leased by AI labs (Anthropic, OpenAI) that don’t carry hyperscaler-scale cash flow of their own. That’s a more fragile financing chain than “Microsoft pays for its own data centers out of Azure cash flow” — every link (neocloud, lab, chip vendor) is more leveraged and more interdependent than the equivalent hyperscaler capex dollar. We’d treat this week as confirmation that the capex cycle is still expanding, not as evidence it’s on firmer footing than before. Watch whether Anthropic’s actual IPO filing, whenever it lands, discloses how these lease obligations are structured on its own balance sheet — that filing will be the first hard look at how much revenue growth is required to service $170B in compute commitments.
