Beyond Price: What the Blockchain Tells You

Price is what you see. On-chain data is what’s actually happening — who is buying, who is selling, whether holders are in profit or loss, whether miners are under stress.

Three on-chain metrics have proven most reliable as cycle bottom detectors. Not perfect — nothing is — but consistent enough across four cycles to be worth taking seriously.

Signal 1: MVRV Z-Score

What it measures: The ratio of Bitcoin’s market capitalization to its “realized capitalization” — the sum of all coins valued at the price they last moved (their cost basis). The Z-Score version normalizes this ratio against its historical standard deviation.

How to read it:

  • Above 7: historically associated with cycle tops (extreme overvaluation vs. cost basis)
  • 2–5: mid-cycle, normal bull market territory
  • Below 1: historically associated with cycle bottoms (market trading at or below aggregate cost basis)
  • Below 0: extremely rare; the deepest bear market floors

Historical bottom readings:

  • November 2011: Z-Score ~0.1
  • January 2015: Z-Score ~0.3
  • December 2018: Z-Score ~0.1
  • November 2022: Z-Score ~0.2

When MVRV Z-Score falls below 1, the average Bitcoin holder is barely above breakeven. At these levels, selling pressure dries up because holders with losses tend to hold rather than realize losses. Supply contraction historically precedes price recovery.

Signal 2: Puell Multiple

What it measures: The ratio of daily miner revenue (in USD) to the 365-day moving average of daily miner revenue.

Why miners matter: Miners are forced sellers. They must sell BTC to pay electricity and hardware costs. When miner revenue is high relative to their moving average (Puell > 2), they are profitable and can sell aggressively, creating sell pressure. When it’s low (Puell < 0.5), miners are under stress and have likely already capitulated.

Miner capitulation — the point where stressed miners can no longer operate profitably and shut down rigs — historically marks the final phase of Bitcoin bear markets. Once the weakest miners exit, the supply overhang clears.

Historical readings at cycle bottoms:

  • 2015 bottom: Puell ~0.3
  • 2018 bottom: Puell ~0.3
  • 2022 bottom: Puell ~0.4

Current readings above 0.7–0.8 suggest miners are not in acute stress, which is consistent with a mid-cycle correction rather than a terminal bear market floor.

Signal 3: SOPR (Spent Output Profit Ratio)

What it measures: When Bitcoin moves on-chain, each transaction either realizes a profit or a loss. SOPR is the ratio of the price at which coins were spent divided by the price at which they were received. Above 1.0 = average transaction is realizing a profit. Below 1.0 = average transaction is realizing a loss.

The psychology of SOPR:

  • In bull markets, SOPR tends to stay above 1. Dips to 1 are buying opportunities (holders take profits, then the market resets).
  • In bear markets, SOPR can stay persistently below 1 as capitulation extends.
  • The key bottom signal: SOPR bouncing from below 1.0 back above it after an extended period of loss-realization. This indicates the weakest holders have finished selling, and surviving holders are not willing to sell at a loss.

Reading Them Together

No single indicator should be used in isolation. The framework I use:

Condition Interpretation
MVRV < 1 AND Puell < 0.5 AND SOPR < 1 High-confidence accumulation zone
MVRV 1–2 AND Puell 0.5–0.8 AND SOPR near 1 Mid-cycle correction, probable floor
MVRV > 3 AND Puell > 1.5 AND SOPR > 1.05 Bull market continuation, not a bottom
MVRV > 6 AND Puell > 2 AND SOPR consistently > 1.05 Late-cycle caution

A convergence of all three in the accumulation zone has marked every major Bitcoin bottom. A convergence in the mid-cycle correction zone suggests a tradeable floor, not a final capitulation bottom.

The Honest Caveat

On-chain data is transparent and verifiable — but it doesn’t tell you when price will recover, only that the structural conditions for recovery are present. Timing remains uncertain. That’s why these signals support a dollar-cost averaging approach rather than a single all-in entry.

1: MVRV Z-Score

Z-Score ~0.1
Z-Score ~0.3
Z-Score ~0.1
Z-Score ~0.2

MVRV Z-Score

2: Puell Multiple
