The Most Important Chart in Long-Term Investing
If you had to choose one chart to orient yourself in any market environment — bull, bear, or sideways — the S&P 500’s century-long log-scale trend channel would be it.
Not because it predicts the future. But because it tells you where you are relative to 100 years of market history.
How the Channel Is Constructed
The channel uses monthly closing prices for the S&P 500 (and its predecessor indices) going back to 1927, plotted on a logarithmic scale.
The upper boundary is drawn through two independent peaks:
- The 1929 pre-crash high
- The 2000 dot-com bubble top
Two peaks nearly 71 years apart, both touching the same line — this is not a drawn line but a discovered one.
The lower boundary is drawn through three independent troughs:
- The 1932 Great Depression absolute bottom
- The 1974 oil shock / Watergate low
- The 2009 financial crisis bottom
Three catastrophic lows spanning 77 years, all on the same line. This is the most remarkable feature of the chart: the market has repeatedly returned to the same real-value floor across entirely different economic eras.
The midline bisects the channel and represents the long-run fair value trend — approximately 3% real annual growth, consistent with U.S. long-run real GDP.
The Channel’s Five Zones
Dividing the channel into five equal zones (by log distance) gives meaningful interpretive regions:
| Zone | Description | Historical Context |
|---|---|---|
| Zone 5 (upper 20%) | Bubble territory | 1929, 1999–2000, 2021–2022 peak |
| Zone 4 (60–80%) | Overvalued, late bull | Various 1990s and 2010s periods |
| Zone 3 (40–60%) | Fair value range | Long-term midpoint |
| Zone 2 (20–40%) | Undervalued, recovery zone | Post-crash recovery periods |
| Zone 1 (lower 20%) | Deep value / capitulation | 1932, 1974, 2009 |
Why the Channel Holds
The channel has survived the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Nixon shock, three major oil crises, the dot-com collapse, the 2008 financial crisis, and COVID. Why?
It’s an expression of fundamental value, not technical magic. The channel’s slope (~3% real) maps directly to long-run U.S. real economic growth. Over long enough periods, equity returns cannot sustainably exceed economic growth without the stock market eventually claiming ownership of the entire economy.
It’s self-reinforcing through market memory. Professional investors, endowment managers, and algorithmic systems all have access to this history. When prices reach the lower boundary, the accumulated historical experience of “this is where it bounced before” becomes a coordinating mechanism.
Where Are We Now?
The honest answer requires you to look at the current chart. (See the S&P 500 channel chart on the homepage.)
What I can say analytically: the 2020–2021 rally pushed prices into Zone 4–5. The 2022 correction brought prices back to Zone 3. The subsequent 2023–2024 recovery pushed back into Zone 4. At Zone 4 levels, the market is pricing in a continuation of above-trend earnings growth — achievable if AI productivity gains materialize, fragile if earnings disappoint.
The critical threshold to watch: A sustained move below the midline (Zone 3 lower boundary) would be the first signal that the structural bull market thesis is under stress.
The Channel Is Not a Trading Tool
I want to be explicit about what this channel is and isn’t.
It is not a tool for timing precise entries and exits. The market spent years in Zone 5 in the 1990s before the dot-com collapse. It can remain extended for longer than any investor can stay solvent.
It is a tool for calibrating expectations. When you know you’re in Zone 5, you should expect lower forward returns and higher drawdown risk. When you’re in Zone 1–2, history strongly favors long-term buyers.
Use the channel to set your risk posture, not your trading alerts.
