The Problem with Recession Calls
By the time a recession is officially declared by the NBER, the stock market has usually already priced most of the damage. The value of leading indicators is not in confirming recessions — it’s in warning before the turn.
Here are the five indicators with the strongest historical track record.
Indicator 1: Yield Curve (2Y–10Y Spread)
Signal: Inversion (2-year yield > 10-year yield) → watch for subsequent un-inversion
Track record: Predicted every U.S. recession since 1955 with one false signal (1966). The inversion itself is the warning; the subsequent un-inversion (return to positive) is the trigger.
Lead time: Typically 12–24 months from inversion to recession start; the un-inversion usually happens 3–6 months before recession onset.
Current status: The curve inverted in 2022–2023, one of the longest inversions on record. Monitor the un-inversion timing carefully.
Indicator 2: ISM Manufacturing PMI
Signal: Reading below 50 (contraction) for 3+ consecutive months, especially below 48
Track record: Manufacturing contractions have preceded or coincided with 8 of the last 10 recessions. Not perfect — manufacturing is a smaller share of the economy than it once was — but still a useful early signal.
Why it leads: Manufacturers have long supply chains and adjust inventory and production before service sector firms. When they cut orders, layoffs follow 3–6 months later.
Current status: ISM has been in contraction territory intermittently since 2022. Watch for persistence.
Indicator 3: Initial Jobless Claims (4-Week Average)
Signal: 4-week moving average rising above 300,000 and continuing to climb; year-over-year increase of 20%+
Track record: Rising initial claims have preceded every recession since 1967. The 4-week average smooths weekly volatility and is more reliable than single-week prints.
Why it leads: Initial claims are filed immediately when someone loses a job — no lag from survey methodology. They are the fastest labor market signal available weekly.
Current status: A sustained rise above 300K would be a meaningful warning sign.
Indicator 4: Conference Board Leading Economic Index (LEI)
Signal: Year-over-year decline of 3%+ sustained for 6+ months
Track record: Has predicted 7 of the last 8 recessions. Composite index incorporating 10 sub-components including building permits, manufacturing hours, and credit conditions.
Why it’s useful: The composite nature reduces false signals from any single volatile component. The 6-month persistence filter eliminates noise.
Current status: Has been in negative YoY territory for extended periods since 2022. Watch the magnitude and persistence.
Indicator 5: Sahm Rule
Signal: 3-month average unemployment rate rises 0.5 percentage points above its 12-month low
Track record: Has triggered at the start of every recession since 1970 with no false signals. Created by former Fed economist Claudia Sahm.
Why it works: Unemployment rises slowly at first, then accelerates. The 0.5% threshold captures the early acceleration phase before it becomes obvious.
Current status: This is the cleanest single indicator. When the Sahm Rule triggers, recession probability becomes very high, very fast.
The Scorecard Approach
Rather than waiting for any single indicator to scream, I track all five simultaneously:
| Indicators signaling | Recession probability |
|---|---|
| 0–1 | Low (~10–15%) |
| 2 | Moderate (~25–35%) |
| 3 | Elevated (~50–60%) |
| 4–5 | High (>75%) |
This approach doesn’t predict timing — it calibrates risk level. When 3+ indicators are signaling simultaneously, the appropriate response is not to panic-sell, but to review portfolio risk and ensure you are positioned for the volatility range that recessions historically produce (average S&P 500 decline: −32%; range: −20% to −57%).
The Most Important Rule
Check the indicators yourself. Don’t wait for financial media to tell you a recession is coming — by then, the market has already discounted it.

(Sahm Rule)
